Started in 1899 by two brothers, Schwartau has become a mainstay in German supermarkets. Known for its delicious and natural products, Schwartau offers jams, jellies, and fruit spreads. With approximately 90% of the fruit coming from within the European Union, it is guaranteed that the highest quality products are being used. There are twenty four different types of fruits, each with their own variations. This dedication makes sure that all the products taste as fresh and as fruity as possible. The products are all produced in Germany, with over forty different jams gently processed into over 100 varieties of jams and fruit products.
Since Schwartau relies on natural ingredients to make its product, Schwartau became a founding member of Lean & Green. In this organization, Schwartau pledged to bring down carbon emissions by 20% by 2018. Schwartau works daily to improve the world through reducing waste. Schwartau proudly recycles 85% of their waste. Moreover, the company is actively working to increase bee population and growth because they recognize that their products would not be possible without the hard work of bees.
Schwartau produces jams, jellies, and fruit spreads. The distinction between the three is very important. Jellies have a blend of about 45% fruit juice, jams have about 45% fruit puree and fruit spreads have at least 50% fruit pieces and puree. Schwartau is proud to offer fruit spreads in the United States.
Since 1899, Schwartau has been rooted in the Schleswig-Holstein region of Germany. Started by brothers Otto and Paul Fromm, Schwartau produced its first branded product in 1912—this was a jam in a can rather than a jar. The success grew so that by 1924 it was necessary to have a recognizable logo. They chose to use the towers of Bad Schwartau, the city after which their product is named. After realizing its desire to produce the highest quality fruit products, Schwartau knew that more had to go into production than just the best fruit. In 1937, the food laboratory was opened to test new recipes and quality test already existing products. Of course, Schwartau was not exempt from feeling the effects of World War II. Nevertheless, in 1949 Schwartau celebrated its 50th anniversary and went back, almost entirely, to the prewar program of production. In 1968, Dr. Oetker took over management. The next year, the company introduced the X-shaped glass that is used today for Schwartau Extra. Not too long after its release, it became a market leader. In 1987, a complete jelly assortment became available in Germany for the first time. While the products have not changed too much, there was still room for innovation within the fruit product production. 2005 marked the release of the Schwartau Velvet line. This line features a velvety smooth texture, omitting all seeds and fruit pieces. Schwartau has offered the highest quality fruit spreads for 118 years. Today, the company still operates in Schwartau and produces the best jams, jellies, and fruit spreads available.
